Well, the preverbal first post. It’s all about firsts, eh? If you don’t have a spectacular, witty, insightful, first blog post, does it mean you’re not successful? This is my first blog attempt ever. Whenever people told me they write blogs, I always thought about Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City sitting down at her computer and writing amazingly witty insightful thoughts about the human psyche and always wrapping it up in an ending question that made you re-think your entire life.
Our society is very much about first impressions. An entire relationship with someone can depend on their first impression of you. I guess that really pertains to college too. When I was interviewing at schools, for music and all, I was so convinced that if I made a super good first impressions, I was set. I thought I knew exactly what they were going to ask me, and how to answer them. But in retrospect, that wasn’t who I really was.
Well, enough talking about first impressions and onto actually making them. This week at Drake was filled with exams and such since it is the week before finals. I think the professors are suppose to take it easy on us since we have final exams the week after, but that was definitely not the case.
I’ve had a ton of projects back to back due. First was a story-telling project for my Elementary Music Methods class which I procrastinated about until the last moment. But then on Monday the semester-long musical-writing project for the same class was due. And on Tuesday, a theory composition was due, so I was up pretty late Monday night for that. But of course, it was my friend’s 21st birthday on Tuesday, so we went to dinner at a local restaurant called Trostel’s Green Brier and it was VERY good. I think that after you live off campus, you appreciate good meals even more because most of the time I’m too lazy to make them for myself. It’s different from when you’re on campus because at least you always have someplace to eat and a meal waiting for you. When you live off campus, you have to fend for yourselves! I like it and hate it too. When I have time, I really like to make food for me and have friends over to entertain. On the flip side, when I don’t have time, I usually might have peanut butter and crackers, or Easy Mac (which I just had for the first time today actually!).
This week also seems to be the week for Holiday (apparently it’s P.C. to say Christmas this year) parties. I have the Student Employee Holiday Party for Admissions. There I am a Student Ambassador and I give tours and do work for Admissions. I LOVE it and I work with the most amazing people too. One fine lady, we shall call her Katie Rae, is especially fun. I also have a studio party for my voice studio that my professor is throwing on Friday. She is so nice to have us all to her house for dinner and time together. We usually do Secret Santa, and every year I’ve been here, it’s gotten more extravagant. You are now required for it to be a funny gift and come up with a theme as well as a poem/description of that person so everyone can guess who it is. It’s a ton of fun though. And later that night on Friday, two of my close friends are having a wine and dessert party at their apartment. There is a dress code and everything. It’s going to be pretty classy.
Every time I post, I’ve decided I’m going to review one thing to do in Des Moines. Week one’s feature is going to be Mars Cafe. Mars just opened last year, and is located on University Ave between 23rd and 24th or for me, downstairs. The atmosphere is very hip and relaxed. They often have bands on the weekends and even open-mic nights (I can definitely tell when they’re having open mic-night ;-) )
